Pete’s Perspective

Let’s take a look at the big picture.
John Baker is resting in White Mountain. He made the run from Koyuk in 13 hours and 8 minutes.
Pete and the team left Koyuk at 15:40. If he makes a similar run, that will put him into White Mountain at between 4:30 and 5:00am tomorrow morning.

UPDATE- Taking a look at last years run time, he did the trip in 11:20. That would put him into White Mountain at between 2 and 3am. That sounds better!

Haltmann not giving UP!

Sven Haltmann left 1 minute after Pete at 15:41. He is down to 8 dogs, while Pete has 12 in harness. Aliy Zirkle is out of Koyuk as well.

John Baker took a bit over 13 hours to make it to White Mountain. That would put Pete into White Mountain early tomorrow Morning at about 4am or so.

8 hour layover puts him back on the trail at noon, and then 10 hours or so to Nome. So probably won’t be pulling an all nighter. (Let’s hope!!)

Baker into White Mountain!

John Baker just arrived into White Mountain. Ramey Smyth is about 7 miles behind him. That’s not quite an hour lead into the checkpoint and an 8 hour mandatory rest stop. They’ll get a vet check, some food, some sleep, and be ready to do a night run into Nome. Looking like a morning finish for the front runners.

A bit more info-

Conflicting reports as to whether Pete made it into Koyuk in front of Sven, but we’ll not squabble over a minute. A virtual dead heat to be sure and the big news is the gain over the run.

Ron and Janet are scurrying around getting ready to go to Nome. A whole contingent of Bethel folk are making their way up to the finish line as we speak. Going to be a fun time in Nome tomorrow and the next day for sure!!

Got the word as well as which members of the team are from Jeff Kings Kennel- See their furry faces below:

It’s going to be a shoot out in the Wild Wild West!

John Baker’s lead has dwindled to 6 miles. That’s about 30 minutes. He is 10 miles out of White Mountain and “Home Free” for the 8 hour layover. 30 minutes may or may not be enough to best a rested Smyth team on the way to Nome. Man I wish I was going to be in Nome!! This is going to be a good one!

Go John GO!!

Mike Jr. Update – Into Koyuk

Team Williams is into Koyuk with a very good time of 6 hours 28 minutes. He is running 9 dogs, but with a time like that, things must be going according to plan.

Teams are taking between 4 and 5 hour rest breaks in Koyuk in anticipation of the last stretch to White Mountain where they get a mandatory 8 hour layover/break.

John Baker is still 18 miles, about 2 to 2 1/2 hours from White Mountain. His lead is 7 miles or about 50 minutes. He may have increased that lead slightly.

We’ll keep you posted and are still waiting for photos.
