Off the trail…

Just spoke to Dave Diehl in Aniak. Apparently Pete is off the trail. They are supposed to be sending snowmachines out to let him know he has missed the trail. Originally we were thinking that it was a Satellite GPS problem, but apperently he has missed the trail turn off.

There is a big Trail Marker that is marked with reflective tape as well that indicates the turnoff. We aren’t sure what has happened, but I am sure Pete will have stories to tell once we hear from him.

He isn’t the first big time musher to lose the trail in a big race. Over the years it has happened to the best of them.

Dave said that Pete’s dogs look great and he was gaining on the leaders who are bunched up at the head of the pack.

I also called Myron Angstman and asked him his thoughts. Basically it is a pretty tough deal on dogs and the Musher when this kind of thing happens. He is about an hour off the trail, so he has another hour to get back on the trail. But not only that, his schedule is going to be off because he will more than likely have to snack his dogs at some point before he gets to Kalskag. That will take a bit more time.

The thing to remember here is that this is Mushing. Anything can happen and usually does.

Team Kaiser is on the go. A quick sign in to the checkpoint and off on the trail! I spoke with Janet a minute ago and she said Richie Diehl’s father was hoping that Richie could make it through without stopping as well. Veteran Musher Nathan Underwood had this problem in the past where the dogs think they are home and don’t want to head back on the trail. Richie has lots of experience though, and I don’t think he’ll be there long.

Pete is now in 4th place according to the Tracker.

Lance Mackey, Rohn Buser, and Paul Gebhardt are in front of him in that order. The next real test will be times into Kalskag. This is a tough section of the trail out over the tundra, but conditions are absolutely excellent right now. This is also the longest section of the race between checkpoints. There is a tent on Whitefish lake, but it is not a checkpoint and mushers won’t stop. They will head for Kalskag where water and soup await. A short break in Kalskag will have the mushers starting on the road to the Finish line.

Go Team Kaiser!

Tracker has Pete on the road in Aniak right behind his good friend and fellow musher Richie Diehl. We are supposed to have some photos shortly from Richie’s Dad. Will have an update soon.

Thanks for watching!! I am hoping to talk with someone up there shortly!

Pete and the Team on the Trail to Aniak

In the excitement of the Bogus 150 Win, let’s not forget the A-Team out on the trail! Pete and the team left Kalskag in 9th place. The teams are grouped pretty closely together and it is still anyone’s race. The Tracker Map shows Pete in 8th place. The placing is a little out of order because one musher, Scott Smith, didn’t take his layover in Kalskag and went ahead to Aniak. He is in the middle of his layover and by the time it is over, many teams will have passed him. Sometimes this strategy can pay out, but most times it doesn’t. Each musher has a game plan they start out with and that’s why I am not too worried about Pete’s position right now. The teams to beat so far are the  Busers and Mackey who seem to have some good times. Striking distance is still within range for Pete and the team.

Pete was out of Kalskag at 11:05am with 14 dogs. That is just 29 minutes behind the first musher. Start time adjustments are now complete, so the order will establish itself fully after teams leave Aniak.

Go Team Kaiser!

We are so proud of Jennifer Peeks. She and the team really had no expectation of winning. The green rookie just was going to try to have a clean race and have a good time. She is the first Woman to win the Bogus Creek 150 and Team Kaiser couldn’t be happier for her. Congratulations Jennifer!!

Congratulations to Lewis Pavilla!

Our congratulations go out to Lewis Pavilla of Bad River Kennels from Kwethluk. They were the team to beat and besting them is a true accomplishment. Their dedication to the Bogus Creek 150 is truly what makes it special. I talked with Lewis after his finish and he told me he had won the 150 FOUR times! What an accomplishment! Here are a few photos of this great Musher and his wife!

I asked Jenn about the Checkpoint at the Bogus Creek 150. Unlike other races, in the Bogus Creek 150, a team has a “Pit Crew” that gets the camp all setup for the team once they arrive. Bogus Creek is in the wild, so everything must be brought in. Tents, Food, and other supplies are brought up by the Pit Crew.

Here’s what she and Ron had to say:

Here is the Saturday Morning KYUK Report from Kalskag. It sounds like a perfect day for mushing. No wind and just above zero. Teams are resting and will be out on the trail in a couple of hours. Times will be adjusted during the Kalskag layover so Pete arrived in 11th and will leave in 9th place. It is a very close race with the pack made up of the best teams in Mushing. Buser, Mackey, Baker, Kaiser, Redington, Williams– That’s why they come here! The best teams run the K300!

Good Morning Race Fans! K300 Saturday!

Good Morning Race Fans! Today will be bound to be an exciting day in Dog Mushing. Pete and the team are resting in Kalskag. They arrived at 5:01am in 11th place. After a 6 hour layover, the teams will be able to head out on the trail.

The front runners were into Kalskag about 45 minutes ahead of Team Kaiser. Rohn Buser was first into Kalskag at 4:16am followed closely by Lance Mackey at 4:18am. I’ll be trying to get some news from Kalskag to see how it’s going with a personal touch.

In Bogus Creek 150 News, Team Kaiser Jenn and the team are through Akiak. Jenn was first into the Bogus Creek Checkpoint 11:52pm just 8 minutes before Jeremiah Klejka. Presently Tuluksak phones are down, so the K300 doesn’t have any info yet. Akiak is 30 miles up the trail from the Finish. This would put a finish between 10:30 and 11:30am. Teams are traveling about 2 hours behind last year’s times. For some reason K300 isn’t tracking Akiak times, so cannot make too much of a forecast until we see her into Kwethluk. Jenn has been leading the race for much of the time, but is followed closely by musher Lewis Pavilla. It’s going to be a battle for sure!

Go Team Kaiser!!
