Set your DVR’s or keep your ears on the news. Sounds like Mackey will be in Nome today in the  afternoon.

Lance Mackey took an Exactly 8 hour layover and was on the move at 4:43am this morning. Yesterday he made the run from Elim to White Mountain at an average speed of close to 7mph. This run is a 77 mile run, but probably a snack in the middle or so. I am predicting (As if I know anything) him to be in Nome between 4 and 5:30. But a safer bet with this guy would be between 3 and 5. Those dogs know when it’s almost over!! In fact they are blazing along at over 9mph right now so stay tuned!

Mackey is into White Mountain and into his mandatory 8 hour layover. He is about 2 1/2 hours in front of the second place musher and Yukon Quest winner Hans Gatt, from Whitehorse. The roles are reversed as Gatt is following Mackey into Nome. Mackey followed Gatt across the Yukon Quest finish line.

Sebastian Schnuelle and Mackey had a “hair” bet with the loser also losing his hair. Say bye bye to your hair Sebastian! And that is some Hair!

2010 Excitement

[I'm not sure what's going on, but now the Iditarod website doesn't have Mackey into Shaktoolik on the Leaderboard, but on Mackey's page it does show him in and out]

Mackey- Shaktoolik – IN- 16:08 OUT- 19:00 DOGS- 12 Time- 6:20 (From UNK)
King- Shaktoolik- IN- 16:45 DOGS- 13 Time- 6:29 (From UNK)

Like Ali and Frasier, these two mushers at the front of the 2010 Iditarod are duking it out like Boxers in an All or Nothing Match. Mackey arrived in Shaktoolik 37 minutes before King. He gained a whole NINE minutes on the stretch which is a virtual tie. Someone’s got to blink, but both of these guys are locked in an epic battle. This has the makings of one of the great dueling matches of all time. Sure glad I’m here to watch it!

King and Mackey are battling it out towards Shaktoolik. Mackey took no rest and went straight to Unalakleet last night with King arriving 3 hours behind him. This morning Mackey left first with 6 hours rest and King is now out 45 minutes after him with 3 hours rest. Their times from Kaltag to Unalakleet were virtually dead even. Mackey is 4 miles in front of King at this point.

What a race!! It never seems to end with those two!!

Neither the Tracker or Standings show Pete as out yet.

Cams page has been updated to show the Unalakleet Steerable Camera at the checkpoint. Check it out!

Jeff King reached Kaltag about 45 minutes before Lance Mackey, but Mackey has decided to stay on the trail while King rests in Kaltag. This should prove exciting. It is an interesting strategy and this might be the deal maker/breaker for both mushers.

Meanwhile back in our neck of the woods, Pete  reached Galena about 30 minutes ago.

Weather in the area is typical for this time of year when not under the influence of storm activity. Very Cold nights, but Sunny days that warm the air dramatically. Long range forecast should be fairly similar weather as the State of Alaska is under the influence of two very large air masses that are not moving. There is a low in the Gulf of Alaska, but it appears not to be causing any dramatic changes for the area short term.

Jeff King is into Kaltag and hot on his heels are Lance Mackey and Hugh Neff.

King was into Kaltag at 11:42am today and Lance Mackey is about an hour behind him. Mackey left Nulato a minute ahead of Neff and the two are pretty close to each other. Neff is about 1/2 mile behind Mackey.

I’ll bet King doesn’t sleep until Nome!!!

Meanwhile, Pete is about 6 miles from Galena. I just spoke to a guy up there who is going to be at the checkpoint and send us the photos.

King- #15  Mackey- #49 Neff- #56
