Trio Report – Off and Running Down the Yukon River Speedway!

kaltag

Kaltag Airport in the Sun with Iditarod Airforce Planes on the Ramp.

The last stretch of the Yukon is underway for our 3 mushers from the YK Delta. Mike Jr. was out at 12:30pm with 9 dogs, about an hour before Pete and Richie who are just now underway. Richie was out at 12:55 with 13 dogs. Pete and the Team were out at 13:15 with 14 dogs.

The front runners are slugging it out at the front of the Pack and should be into Unalakleet early this afternoon. Aliye Zirke and Martin Buser have been swapping the lead back and forth since Kaltag, but it seems that Aliye has the faster Team. At this rate, the Leaders are almost exactly 12 hours ahead of John Baker’s Record 2011 run. If the trail doesn’t slow them down, we are talking a Monday evening Finish which would break the record by many hours.

With such a fast pace, many teams are in the realm of breaching the 2011 Record of 8d 18h 46m 39s. All of the Kusko Trio are on pace for an under 10 day run. This is not only amazing, but VERY Exciting!! Go Teams!!

Trail conditions are just as it has been on the Yukon River Speedway — Frozen, Hard, and Very Fast. Ray Redington Jr. made this run in 3 hours and 33 minutes. Expect our Teams to have similar times around 4 hours arriving in the early evening.
