Midnite Update – Little Buser Breaks

You can say what you want about technology, but in the old days, mushing was not really a spectator sport. Reporters were posted along the trail to send stories back to the public by phone and fax. Now, with the GPS tracker, we can all watch our favorite musher compete with the pack throughout the race.

Bogus GPS has Lewis Pavilla into the Bogus Checkpoint just a few minutes ago (11:50). This puts him just a few minutes ahead of Jen’s time last year. Lewis will be able to leave the checkpoint for the return to the Finish Line just before 4am. This puts the finish similar to last year (10-10:30am)

In the K300, 2012 Champion Rohn Buser did not stop in Tuluksak as expected and is on the trail to Kalskag. He has been leading the pack for a bit here, but there are many miles ahead.

Buser’s Break seems to be the norm as many teams are passing through Tuluksak. Most of the teams are stretched out in a two mile line following Rohn Buser.

Tomorrow morning make sure to stop here and check the GPS with your morning coffee. I am sure excitement and surprises await.

See ya in the morning – We have more from the start and as always commentary and more to keep the excitement going!

As the sun set, it unbelievably got warmer. As over 20 professional teams lined up at the Start line, you could just feel the excitement in the air. There is no way to describe the Kuskokwim 300 but a shootout. Big names come to Bethel to see how they stack up against each other. This year marks the 34th iteration of the event and still they come– Buser times two, King, Kaiser, Baker. The starting order reads like the who’s who of professional mushing.

This year the K300 is also hosting a couple of teams from Siberia and some names that are sure to be in the top 10 in the coming years– Diehl, Williams, Cadzow. The names aren’t well known yet, but you watch– They will be in the news!

10:00pm Update – Pete through Akiak – Jen through Tuluksak

GPS shows Pete through Akiak on the way to Tuluksak. We won’t see anything shake out until early tomorrow morning as teams make their way into Kalskag. Most teams will take a short break tonight in Tuluksak, feed the dogs and have some of the great Tuluksak hospitality in preparation for the trek up to the Kalskag checkpoint. With the wind and the temperatures we have right now, the section from Tuluksak to Kalskag may be the most brutal of the race.

Jen is making good progress on her way to the Bogus campsite. Rick Hanson, Luke Salzbrun, and Ron Kaiser are on their way with all of the camping gear. In the Bogus Creek 150, teams have “Pit Crews” that help out the musher in Bogus. Bogus Creek is just a place, not a village, that has been used since the race inception. This unique race truly has the “bush” flavor. This year will be a special year at Bogus with Rudy Demoski in the pack. Demoski, a veteran of one of the first Kuskokwim 300 races and veteran of mushing since before most of the other mushers were born, will surely regale the others with stories from past races.

Another item of note is that 150 Musher Casey Stockdale is running with 8 dogs from Team Kaiser. We’ll be keeping an eye on Casey as well as the race progresses.

Instructions have been given to our pit crew to get some photos- I can’t wait to see them.

2013 Bogus 150 Start Photos

It was cold. Icy cold. But it didn’t matter as the excitement of the dogs, spectators and mushers warmed everything to a fever pitch. The Bogus Creek 150 is a favorite of local mushers because it is a step up from the sprint race circuit, but doesn’t require the in-depth focus of a long distance mushing program. It also give mushers great experience as they build their mushing program into the next level.

I spoke with Jen and Grandpa Kaiser just before the 150 Start-

8:00 Update – Great Starts – Jen through Akiak

It was cold, but it was fun! Jen and her Team left like clockwork at just after 5:00pm in the Bogus 150. Pete and Team Kaiser were out on the trail just before 7:00pm in the Kuskokwim 300. After I warm up a bit I’ll get the photos up on the website.

Temperatures are pretty cold and the wind is drifting the trail a bit. It was a bitter cold start for the Bogus 150, but by the time the K300 Start began 90 minutes later, it had warmed a bit and the wind had died down so it felt rather pleasant as odd as it sounds! (Or we got used to it!) The fireworks show went off without a hitch marking the start of the K300 Weekend. Fiddle Dances, Basketball, and a whole slew of activities make for almost a Winter Carnival atmosphere this this weekend.

The Bogus 150 Tracker (HERE) shows Jen and her Team just through Akiak. It is too early in the race to make any kind of judgement as to how the race is stacking up, but the work is ahead of her!

I have lots of great items and as soon as my fingers start working correctly, I’ll have them for you– Stay tuned!

Bib Number 18 for the 2013 Kuskokwim 300

Mushers drew starting positions for the K300 tonight. The Long House Bethel Hotel conference room was packed with well wishers, mushers, and of course the Press as mushers selected their bib numbers. The way it works is that Mushers pick their starting position based on when they sign up for the race, so the first musher to sign up gets to select their starting position. Remaining mushers select available positions until all positions are filled. Pete chose number 18.
