Out of Koyuk

From Sebastian Schnuelle - Koyuk this evening at Sunset.

From Sebastian Schnuelle – Koyuk this evening at Sunset.

It’s going to be a real nice night for mushing! It’s still pretty clear and the temperatures will be colder so both dog and Musher alike will be at their peak efficiency. Tired, but ready!

Tonight’s Trail takes the team along the southern coast through Elim to White Mountain.

From Iditarod.com to Elim:

This leg always seems longer than it is. Plan on five to seven hours, more if the wind is blowing. The trail follows the main snowmachine trail to Elim and is usually well marked. However, the wind can blow hard in the Moses Point area and the trail can drift over very quickly. From Koyuk, the trail runs southwest just offshore on the sea ice for about 12 miles and then cuts inland to the west across the wooded peninsula behind Bald Head, a prominent cape.

Ten miles later the trail crosses the mouth of the Kwik River, makes a three mile overland run along the dune line, and then jumps two miles across Kwiniuk Inlet to Moses Point. It then runs along a narrow spit and across some tidelands for about 11 miles to the old Moses Point FAA station, now abandoned. From there, the trail usually follows a nine-mile unplowed state highway up and over the heavily forested bluffs and down into Elim. An alternate route has been followed in the past along the sea ice from Moses Point to Elim.

Houston – We have a Winner!

1-DSC_0022

Meet Melissa McGuire (Wonder if she’s related to someone in Nome?) Melissa was the winner of Guess Pete’s Unalakleet Time.  It’s no wonder! She works for NASA as a Rocket Scientist (kinda)!!

From Melissa-

I’m an aerospace engineer at NASA Johnson Space Center where I work for the International Space Station program. I’ve only started really paying attention to the Iditarod during the past few years.  I am impressed with the passion of everyone involved. I really enjoy following along with the race and learning more about
the sport.  Perhaps I also like sitting around calculating the times and comparing them current and past race results. 🙂  I wish Team Kaiser all the best!

Congratulations Melissa- Your Prize is on the way!

Lucky 13! Go Team Go!

Pete and the Team were into Koyuk just after 5pm this evening.  They are holding 13 position after picking off a few unsuspecting Teams along the trail. The excitement is at the front of the pack where at least 4 teams have a shot at the Trophy. Most exciting is what is going to happen next.

Jeff King went right through Koyuk to lead the race for the first time. He then camped out on the trail between Koyuk and Elim. Let the mind games begin. Undoubtedly that rushed Mitch Seavey, whose race this might be to lose, out of the checkpoint and onto the trail. Imagine his surprise meeting Jeff and his Team on the trail! Now it has everyone wondering if this is the master chess move by possibly allowing Jeff to push into White Mountain and a mandatory 8 hour layover without stopping in Elim. Will Seavey have enough gas in the tank to do the same? This is the shootout we have been waiting 900 miles for! Wahoo Iditarod!!

Here are a couple of Sebastian Schnuelle’s photos of Pete and the Team on the trail to Koyuk.
