Into Nikolai

With one of the fastest times from Rohn to Nikolai, Pete and the Team made it into the village of Nikolai at 1:25pm with 15 dogs.  What wonderful weather for Mushing!!

Pete was the 22nd Musher into Nikolai. Temperatures in the middle 20’s are a bit warm for the dogs, so I expect more night runs if these temperatures remain.

Almost out of the Alaska Range

Pete and the team left Rohn this morning at 5:08am. He dropped a dog in Rohn so he is running with 15. The front runners went through pretty fast from Rainy to Rohn. Rick Swenson is running with a broken collarbone. The big news is Mike Williams Jr. He is running in 9th position.

The section ahead out of the Alaska Range is called the Farewell Burn. A fire many years ago left in its wake a moonscape of downed trees and flatland. It takes decades and decades for a burn to recover, so conditions don’t improve from year to year.

Temperatures are perfect for Mushing!

McGrath- Temp- 10F Wind- NNE at 10mph.

Pete will be mushing with a slight crosswind, but luckily there’s not much of it and it’s not in his face for the most part. GO TEAM! (Farewell conditions could be substantially worse than McGrath also)

ROHN – IN-3/7/2011 – 22:15 OUT-3/8/2011 – 05:08 – DOGS-15

Pete is between the two hills right now.
