Nikolai
Pete and the Team just arrived into the Nikolai checkpoint just about 3:00pm. After the ordeal that Teams have been having since Rainy Pass, I’m sure he will be breathing a sigh of relief that the worst stretch of trail is possibly over. From Nikolai it is a river trail to McGrath, Takotna, and North to Ruby.
Weather in McGrath is still cloudy with overcast skies, temperatures in the teens and light winds. Sunshine would be good about now, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen right away.
Pete and the Team are going to take a good long break here. They made the run in from the camping spot at Farewell in about 6 hours, so that plays in pretty good with his strategy and he gets the added benefit of some hot food and water for the dogs. Pete’s time from Rohn was almost identical to Richie, so they seem to be pretty evenly matched.
Let’s hope he and the Team made out better than some of his trail compadre’s and that he gets a bit of rest. Set that timer Pete!
