Trail Report – Jake has to Scratch – Dogs Good – Sled Broken

1979882_713403358691731_1910178800_nWith a sled broken beyond repair, Jake Berkowitz had to say “Uncle” and bow out of the 2014 Iditarod Trail Race. We really feel bad here at Kaiser Racing, as Jake is about the nicest guy on the trail and really lives to mush dogs. The dogs are great, but the trail took its toll on his sled.

Surely you will remember Jake- He’s the big guy all dressed in Orange! Take Care Jake! We will be thinking about you!

Update: Berkowitz has scratched from the 2014 Iditarod

I received a call from Jake via SAT phone. He has pressed his help button. Besides the heavy heart and worry for the safety of other mushers and dogs on the trail, he and the apex team are overall healthy and safe. His sled is broken beyond repair. Jake has tirelessly worked to repair it multiple time while putting in all efforts to continue with his energetic team to the next checkpoint but he literally can’t make it 100 ft with these trail conditions. At this moment he is working with officials for plan B. Jake is hoping to get his backup sled in somehow to mush the dogs to a checkpoint. Thank you everyone for your good thoughts and prayers. Please continue to send those to all mushers and dogs continuing the journey of Iditarod 2014, especially Apex rookie musher Alex Buetow.
