2012 K300 Friday Midnight Update

Midnight Update- Pete into Tuluksak and Jenn approaching Bogus.

Tracker shows Pete into and out of Tuluksak. No Official Updates. GPS is showing slower times for Pete and the team, we will know more once they reach Kalskag. Without official updates from K300, I cannot tell if his speed has improved by doing some comparison checks between checkpoints. From the GPS tracker, it shows a couple of teams with real fast times (Gephardt and Buser) then the majority of the mushers in the middle of the pack about 15 minutes behind. Then the latter part of the bunch is about 15 minutes behind the middle and about 30 minutes behind the leaders. Pete is in the latter group at this point, but that really doesn’t mean anything at this point.

The Tuluksak to Kalskag section of the trail is a mixed bag. It heads in through snowmachine and other trails and sloughs through the Bogus 150 Checkpoint and back onto the Kuskokwim River. The initial portion of the River can be brutal in the wind. One of my favorite memories of the race was many years ago when I was the official truck for the race. We were on the river near a bluffed portion of the river in the middle of the night and a beautiful full moon. Myron Angstman was leading the race and the scene was just amazing. The Moon gave everything either a blueness or a shadow and Myron’s team glided through the shadows while his team was lit up by the moon. It was pretty awesome. He ended up winning in record time that year. (Don’t remember which year- If you have an idea comment below)

Here is Pete’s 2011 K300 Times.
